The particular village in the article, Newtok, is part of our school district and the Nelson Island that they plan to move onto is indeed the Nelson Island that I live on. The article states that they are some of the first American refugees of global warming. That's a crazy thought.
The permanently frozen subsoil, known as permafrost, upon which many Native Alaskan villages rest is melting.
